What is the Transformational Cost Management Program?

Walgreens announced a transformational cost management program that was expected to deliver in excess of $2.0 billion of annual cost savings by fiscal 2022 (the “Transformational Cost Management Program”). At the end of fiscal 2021, Walgreens had delivered this annual cost savings goal.

Building on the successful implementation of the Transformational Cost Management Program to date and as part of the Walgreens' strategic realignment to create even greater focus on the Walgreens' core business, on October 12, 2021, the Board of Directors approved an expansion and extension of the Transformational Cost Management Program through the end of fiscal 2024. The expanded Transformational Cost Management Program is expected to deliver incremental savings from existing programs and a comprehensive funnel of new initiatives which are intended to improve operating effectiveness and better position the core business for the future. The expansion of the program reflects further strategic initiatives to optimize real estate, implement a global business and centralized services model, as well as leverage technology and new business models to streamline processes across the organization. As a result, Walgreens is increasing its annual savings target to $3.3 billion of annual cost savings by fiscal 2024.

The Transformational Cost Management Program, which is multi-faceted and includes divisional optimization initiatives, global smart spending, global smart organization and the transformation of the Company’s information technology (IT) capabilities, is designed to help the Company achieve increased cost efficiencies. To date, the Company has taken actions across all aspects of the Transformational Cost Management Program. The actions under the Transformational Cost Management Program focus on all reportable segments and the Company’s global functions. Divisional optimization within each of the Company’s segments includes activities such as optimization of stores. As a result of the expanded program, the Company now plans to reduce its presence by up to 150 Boots stores in the UK and up to 150 stores in the United States over the next three years, which are incremental to the previously planned reduction of approximately 200 Boots stores in the UK and approximately 250 stores in the United States.

What is Walgreen's corporate strategy?

Walgreens announced the launch of its new healthcare strategy back in Oct 2021. Walgreens plans to become a leading provider of local clinical care services by leveraging its consumer-centric technology and pharmacy network to deliver value-based care. Walgreens also plans to continue to transform its core pharmacy and retail business. The Walgreens' goal is to provide better consumer experiences, improve health outcomes and lower costs. At the center of the Walgreens' healthcare strategy is Walgreens Health, a technology enabled care model powered by a nationally scaled, locally delivered healthcare platform. To advance its strategy, Walgreens announced majority investments in Village Practice Management Company, LLC (“VillageMD”) and CareCentrix, Inc. (“CareCentrix”) which it believes will strengthen Walgreens Health capabilities in primary care, post-acute care and home care.

Where is Walgreens investing in their business?

PREVIEW

Walgreens Boots Alliance gets personal with AI
Feb 2022
WBA’s modernization of its IT stack has entailed migrating the back-end processes that drive its online retail business, such as accounts payable, the general ledger, and inventory management, to Microsoft’s cloud. As part of this, WBA rebuilt its business application stack by moving to SAP S/4HANA and migrating to ServiceNow’s cloud-based automated operational services. The company also started consolidating its numerous data assets into a Microsoft Azure data lake, a shift that has proved pivotal to making analytics and AI magic happen, Tinto says. As part of this transformation, WBA migrated from legacy databases to advanced cloud databases and analytics, deploying Azure Synapse for relational data, Azure Cosmos for unstructured and semi-structured data, and MongoDB for document-oriented models. The retail chain is also migrating on-premises data stored in Teradata, Netezza, and Hadoop appliances to the cloud, leveraging Snowflake for data warehousing and Databricks for AI, Tinto says.

That data foundation has proved key to establishing WBA’s next-generation services, enabling developers and data scientists in WBA’s 2,000-member IT staff, along with thousands of its partners’ programmers, to build about 100 in-house AI products to date, Tinto says.

In the third year of its transformation, WBA’s top focus is now to build out customer profiles and offer mass personalization to its customers, advancing its online dispensing system and giving consumers more management of prescriptions online, according to Tinto. “It’s really the consolidation and curation of all of our data is how we start building the customer profiles and personalization capabilities,” Tinto says, adding that the company is implementing cloud services in a manner that enables the company to “harmonize between global capability and local adaptation.”

“We have the set the foundation. We are no longer moving to the cloud. We are in the cloud,” Tinto says, noting that the company is finalizing its online dispensing system and moving more aggressively into data analytics that are “much more prescriptive and predictive.”

WBA, for instance, signed a partnership with Microsoft and Adobe 18 months ago to offer one-to-one communications with consumers and to deliver tailored prescription experiences online.

How Walgreens Boots Stores Prevent Ghosting
Nov 2021
Ghosting a Brand
A recent survey shows that 73% of consumers will “ghost” a brand for delivering poor customer service. Yet, less than half of us ever complain directly to the company, which means that “companies may be losing revenue they weren’t aware of.” Great business leaders know that delivering fantastic customer service is more important now than ever. Our time and attention are in high demand. The world feels busier due to increased media proliferation. It is easy to feel bombarded.

Proactive Problem Solving
These things were on my mind when I recently talked to Francesco Tinto, senior vice president and global CIO for Walgreens Boots Alliance (WBA), about customer experience and brand loyalty.

Delivering on Brand Promise
Known in the U.S. as Walgreens and as Boots in other global locations, WBA recently invested in SAP S/4HANA Cloud and other cloud solutions for its nearly 9,000 Walgreens retail stores.

Feeling Special
When a brand proactively solves my problems and values my time, I feel special. The proactive service Tinto described lets customers know that Walgreens understands their needs and values their time. If you boil down all of the research and surveys and models about customer experience and service, many of us seem to want the same thing.

What are the Walgreens Executives saying about business performance?

PREVIEW

Walgreens Boots Alliance, Inc. (WBA) Q3 2022 Earnings Conference Call
June 30, 2022

Executives in Attendance:

• Tiffany Kanaga - Vice President, Global Investor Relations
• Rosalind Brewer - Chief Executive Officer
• James Kehoe - Executive Vice President and Global Chief Financial Officer
• John Standley - President, Walgreens

Comments from Rosalind Brewer - Chief Executive Officer:

"Walgreens Boots Alliance delivered consistent execution in the third quarter against very robust growth last year. Sales increased low single digits on a core basis in constant currency, excluding the negative impact of AllianceRx Walgreens and the 65% pro forma sales growth at Walgreens Health. The International business more than doubled its adjusted operating income with its retail sales recovery, and the U.S. segment achieved solid retail comp growth against challenging multiyear comparisons with positive traffic trends as consumers continue to depend on Walgreens for their essential needs."

"Underpinning our efforts is our strengthened retail products and customer leadership team with 3 new executives. Walgreens Chief Marketing Officer, Linh Peters, joined us from Calvin Klein, where she served as their Global Chief Marketing Officer, with experience also at Starbucks, Target and Ulta Beauty. Bala Visalatha is in our newly created role of Chief Product Officer having most recently been Vice President of eCommerce at Walmart U.S. And finally, Luke Rauch is our new Chief Merchant, rejoining the merchandising organization after focusing on strategy as my Chief of Staff. We have the right team in place to support our high-performance culture to guide our resilient core business and to serve our customers through these turbulent times.”
